Overview

Tanzania's northern zone is a paradise for hiking enthusiasts, offering a variety of breathtaking trails that cater to all experience levels. Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, is undoubtedly the most popular destination for hikers, especially in October, when the weather is most agreeable, providing the best chance of reaching the summit. June to November and February are also excellent months for hiking Kilimanjaro due to minimal rain. Crowned as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kilimanjaro is teeming with diverse wildlife, including baboons, mongooses, elephants, and bush pigs, all of which can be spotted in the surrounding national park. The edge of the mountain also offers the opportunity to explore Lake Chala, a stunning crater lake with crystal-clear waters in shades of turquoise and emerald green. Beyond Kilimanjaro, the northern zone boasts a range of other incredible hiking destinations:

  • Mount Meru: The second highest mountain in Tanzania, located in Arusha National Park, offers an equally rewarding climb with spectacular views of Kilimanjaro from its summit. The trail passes through dense forest filled with wildlife like buffaloes, giraffes, and monkeys, and the final ascent brings you to the rocky summit for a magnificent sunrise view.
  • Ngorongoro Highlands: Known for its lush vegetation and dramatic landscapes, the highlands offer challenging treks through misty forests and crater rims, leading to breathtaking vistas of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater and surrounding wilderness.
  • Empakaai Crater: For those looking for a shorter yet equally rewarding hike, Empakaai Crater in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area provides a descent into a lush green crater with a beautiful alkaline lake at its base. This hike offers the chance to see flamingos, waterbucks, and various bird species.
  • Longido Mountain: Located near the Kenyan border, this lesser-known mountain offers a more off-the-beaten-path hiking experience. The trail takes you through Maasai land, offering cultural encounters along with scenic views of the surrounding plains and distant Mount Kilimanjaro.
  • Lake Natron and Ol Doinyo Lengai: For the adventurous, a hike around the shores of Lake Natron and an ascent of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the only active volcano in the region, is a thrilling experience. The hike offers surreal views of the soda lake, which is a breeding ground for flamingos, and a challenging climb up the steep volcanic slopes.
  • Usambara Mountains: Located slightly off the main northern circuit, the Usambara Mountains provide a tranquil hiking experience, with trails meandering through lush forests, small villages, and offering panoramic views of the surrounding lowlands.
Whether you're scaling the iconic Kilimanjaro or exploring the remote craters and mountains, hiking in Tanzania's northern zone offers unforgettable experiences filled with awe-inspiring landscapes, diverse wildlife, and unique cultural encounters.
